Google Summer of Code 2008 Project Ideas V 2.0
Ok, so our first run has taken a bit of a different path. Although the Python Software Foundation (PSF) was excited about weMap they recommended we approach the TurboGears GSoC team.
With some steering and sound advice from the PSF, the TurboGears team, our mentor Andrey Petrov and Greg Wilson we’re now on our way!

Google Summer of Code 2008 Project Ideas
The weMap project is applying to Google Summer of Code under the Python Software Foundation.
Here are our project ideas:
Mapping Interface:
- Customizable organizational layers – users can choose
from a variety of contextually relevant organizational categories to
appear on the map (i.e. ESL classes, libraries, schools, etc.) - Search for services by city/region selection or address input
- Select layers and copy a map to embed on another website
Admin Panel Interface:
- Import data from other sources (such as
census/statistical data) and map data to the central database - Improve usability
Back-end:
- Deal with multi-level taxonomies
- Handle multiple user levels
- Method for connecting database output to other services
- Increase support for input file formats
- Use multiple geocoding services to increase address searching matches
- Algorithm to optimize searches for duplicate records.
These are just some proposals, feel free to comment and propose some ideas of your own!
