Google Summer of Code 2008 Project Ideas

March 24, 2008

The weMap project is applying to Google Summer of Code under the Python Software Foundation.

Here are our project ideas:

Mapping Interface:

  • Customizable organizational layers – users can choose
from a variety of contextually relevant organizational categories to
appear on the map (i.e. ESL classes, libraries, schools, etc.)
  • Search for services by city/region selection or address input
  • Select layers and copy a map to embed on another website

Admin Panel Interface:

  • Import data from other sources (such as
census/statistical data) and map data to the central database
  • Improve usability

Back-end:

  • Deal with multi-level taxonomies
  • Handle multiple user levels
  • Method for connecting database output to other services
  • Increase support for input file formats
  • Use multiple geocoding services to increase address searching matches
  • Algorithm to optimize searches for duplicate records.

These are just some proposals, feel free to comment and propose some ideas of your own!
